Mo McAuley’s work first came to my attention via her short story “The A-Z Man”. I was applying for a job at East of the Web, and part of the application was to approve anonymous stories, one of which was “The A-Z Man”. Although I never got around to completing my application for this job, I was very impressed by this short and was wondering who wrote. To my delight, I discovered today that it was Mo McAuley who had written it. “The A-Z Man” was one of the prizewinners in the 2003 Bridport Prize. Mo has been successful with both her childrens’ stories, and her more adult stories, such as “The A-Z Man”. In 2004, Mo came second in The New Writer’s Prose and Poetry Prize with “Not Really Homes and Gardens”. She’s also been published in “Good Housekeeping”, “QWF”, “Buzzwords”, “East of the Web”, “Electric Acorn”, and the short story anthology “Teaching a Chicken to Swim”. Mo has been awarded a BA in English and History from the University of London, and has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Glamorgan (which looks to be an incredibly good course). She’s into yoga in a big way. Mo McAuley lives in Kent with her family.

J K Rowling wins US Best Seller Award

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” has won the US Best Seller Award for books for the year of 2005, despite having only gone on sale two weeks before the closing date. Over 600,000 copies have been sold in the US, selling nearly 3 times as many as its nearest competitor, Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code”. The strong performance of the novel also helped Scholastic, Harry Potter’s US publisher, drop its losses down to $21million from $50million a year ago.
